Hi. I would suggest that choice of internal or external filter (provided that its suitable for tank's water volume) comes down largely to personal preference and budget. Internal filters are easier to install and cost less. External filters will not take up tank space but are more expensive.

I'm not sure if you are cycling with fish in the tank. I've only ever done fish-less cycling in which case I wouldn't advise changing the water. If you have fish in the tank, however, you will need to do large and regular water changes as the build up of chemicals during this process could be fatal to your fish.

There are a lot of gravel cleaners available. I use the Eheim Automatic Gravel Cleaner which is battery-powered and does NOT remove water like a syphon but filters the water and returns it to the tank. The water will temporarily cloud following use but this will clear!

i have just got my Fluval Roma 200 and i got an internal filter (fluvil u4) in my deal. I keep gold fish, fan tails and a hoplo in the tank along with some live plnts. Do you think a external filter would be a huge advantange? Which gravel cleaner would be good to get and after two weeks my water looks very dirty still and i have been doing a 15% water change evey few days. Help please.
